Direct observations of single sonoluminescence pulses

چکیده

Previous reports have described experimental measurements and theoretical descriptions of sonoluminescence without clearly resolving the physical events that underlie this phenomenon. Although incomplete, these results have led to suggestions that sonoluminescence might be such an extreme process that it could serve as an unusual inertial confinement source of fusion neutrons. Such a possibility depends on physical details of individual sonoluminescence events such as the source temperature, diameter, and density. The present report describes attempts to measure the diameter and duration of single sonoluminescence flashes. In both cases the results were limited by the resolution of the instruments, giving diameters of the order of 3 Frn or less and durations of the order of 12 ps, or less.

Moving single bubble sonoluminescence has been discovered after searches to find the fluids other than water for observing SBSL. The main property of these fluids is their more viscosity rather than water. In this paper, after introducing the forces which act on sonoluminescing bubble, the moving of the bubble have been simulated. For this purpose, the bubble’s equation of motion is coupled w...

Acoustical stability of a sonoluminescing bubble.

In the parameter region for sonoluminescence of a single levitated bubble in a water-filled resonator it is observed that the bubble may have an enormous spatial stability leaving it "pinned" in the fluid and allowing it to emit light pulses of picosecond accuracy. We report here observations of a complex harmonic structure in the acoustic field surrounding a sonoluminescing bubble. We show tha...

Bremsstrahlung of nitrogen and noble gases in single-bubble sonoluminescence

A hydrodynamic model, discussing neutral gases as well as plasmas, is applied to simulate single-bubble sonoluminescence. In this model, thermal conduction and various inelastic impact processes such as dissociation, ionization, and recombination are considered. Bremsstrahlung is assumed as the mechanism of the picosecond light pulse in sonoluminescence. Diatomic nitrogen and noble gas bubbles ...

Does water vapor prevent upscaling sonoluminescence?

Experimental results for single-bubble sonoluminescence of air bubbles at very low frequency f = 7.1 kHz are presented: In contrast to the predictions of a recent model [S. Hilgenfeldt and D. Lohse, Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 1036 (1999)], the bubbles are only as bright (10(4)-10(5) photons per pulse) and the pulses as long (approximately 150 ps) as at f = 20 kHz. We can theoretically account for thi...

Mie scattering from a sonoluminescing air bubble in water.

A single bubble of air in water can emit pulses of blue-white light that have durations of less than 50 ps while it is oscillating in an acoustic standing wave. The emission is called sonoluminescence. A knowledge of the bubble diameter throughout the cycle, and in particular near the time of sonoluminescence emission, can provide important information about the phenomenon. A new Mie scattering...
